Plugging into the Magic of Your Own Inner Light… Through a Children’s Book

A serene nature scene featuring a sunlit meadow with vibrant wildflowers, including daisies and clover. Two blue butterflies flutter above, while a ladybug and a snail are nestled among the plants.

We often get caught up in the mundane instead of living in wonder at the things we’ve accomplished, what we’ve created, and the experiences we’ve had. Not in an egoic sense, but in a way that shows us the power within us to create meaning in our own lives. We all have the ability to flip the switch from mundane to magic with a slight adjustment in perception. It’s simple and yet very powerful! For me, it’s sometimes a bit elusive. I have a habit of looking for the next thing to get done instead of appreciating the things I’ve already createdโ€”the amazing dinner I made last night, the garden beds I built in my backyard, the house remodeling (transformation) project… and my children’s book… Sophie’s Inner Light.

I wrote Sophie’s Inner Light for grownups as much as for children. Many of us are programmed to believe that the world is a cold, harsh place, and if we were indeed taught that, it becomes our perception of truth. But what if we were taught that the world is a loving, supportive, giving place, and that inside us is our connection to All That Isโ€”through our Inner Light? It’s within us and always present, ready to help and guide us through every aspect of our lives. It is magnified when we acknowledge it, embrace it, and nurture it. How do we do that? By loving ourselves unconditionally. And how do we do that if we learned criticism, judgment, and self-condemnation?

I’ve been working on the answer to this question for the better part of my life. As a child, I noticed that not all people were this way. Family dynamics were different for others than they were in my own family, and everyone seemed to have a different experience of life. So, I reasoned, there must be an opportunity to be happy and fulfilled, no matter our circumstances. I just needed to find out how. I didn’t understand then that the way I felt in my body was simply a physical reaction to learned thoughts and beliefs – early programming bestowed upon me by others. I was trained, programmed, to think this way. And programming could be changed. For me, as a child and adolescent, there was hope. It’s taken me years, and a lot of painful gut punches, to relearn what I knew as a very young child: the Inner Light is always there, waiting for me to come back to it. Yours is, too.

A young girl with short brown hair and freckles sits in a sunny meadow surrounded by flowers, wearing a red dress and red sneakers, with a thoughtful expression.

Gratefully and humbly, I loved myself enough to finish writing Sophie’s Inner Light. She lives from a place of self-love and connection to that Inner Lightโ€”an Inner Light that I came to know well as an adult, sometimes in very powerful ways. Sophie is part of my own healing and an expression of my deep desire to help children stay connected to their Inner Light, no matter what is happening around them or throughout their lives.

My hope is that, through the Sophie books, we can inspire ourselves to heal our own connection to our Inner Light while helping our children hold on to theirs. Experiencing Sophie with your child, engaging with them, and seeing through their eyes will deepen your relationship with both your child and your own Inner Light. Sophie’s Inner Light is just the beginning…
